Team Square Roots Conquers the 2025 Absa Cape Epic
The 2025 Absa Cape Epic once again lived up to its reputation as The Untamed African MTB Race, testing endurance, resilience, and pure determination. Competing as Team Square Roots, friends Shane Root and Cuan Rootman took on the eight-day challenge through South Africa’s most unforgiving terrain, proudly supported by Titeforce.com.
Racing Through Extremes
This year’s race delivered everything from blistering 50°C heat to days of howling wind, driving rain, and thick mud. Riders endured scorching climbs, treacherous descents, and energy-sapping trails that left no room for error. It was a true showcase of human endurance and mechanical reliability, where preparation met the unpredictable force of nature.
A Tough Start and Steady Recovery
Early in Stage 1, Shane suffered a heavy crash that could have ended their race before it truly began. “We had trained hard, our preparation was solid, but that crash sprinkled some sand into well-trained gears,” recalled Rootman. Despite the setback, Team Square Roots regrouped and Shane pushed through the pain, maintaining composure and consistency across the following stages. Their determination and teamwork turned a rough start into a strong and respectable finish.
A Beast of a Race
Each stage demanded everything: strength, strategy, and mental grit. From baking heat to freezing storms, the terrain punished even the best-prepared riders. Yet amidst the hardship were moments of pure joy, shared effort, and awe-inspiring scenery. “We would like to thank those that helped us get here. This race is a beast and definitely ranks up with my top riding experiences,” said Rootman.
